Get the Look: Anthropologie Vase

We've had this vase in the girls bathroom for years. The sticks inside of it were a part of centerpieces at our wedding 9 1/2 years ago. I love the vase and the colors but since the rest of the decor was changing (see the design board here) it needed an update.
Do you like it, displayed with children's mouth wash and the green toilet seat on the far right? We're fancy here.

I went straight to Anthropologie's website to see what amazing tricks they have up their sleeve. I love their stuff but not so much the price tag. This great vase was the one that inspired me. $88, people. What, is it made out of angel tears?! Just kidding, love you, Anthropologie.

So, mine and theirs are a similar shape. I got started by painting a few coats of cheap craft paint in navy-ish blue. I could have spray painted but it's more expensive and not already available at my house. It's probably more durable but this vase never gets handled so I didn't think durability was an issue.

And then, I got so EXCITED, that I forgot to take a picture of the just blue vase... Sorry.  I used a paint marker to free hand some stripes from top to bottom on the vase. It was looking good but I wanted skinnier stripes and more stripes.

I got out a chip brush. They're like the cheapest paint brushes you can buy and the bristles are really uneven and sparse which I knew would give me the texture I wanted.

I used small amounts of white paint and lightly brushed it over the surface of the vase. You can see that it didn't help me camouflage the vases pattern but it did give me the look I was going for. I went back over it once more with a coat of blue and viola. I love it!

You can still see the pattern a bit but for $87.50 less, I'll let it slide.

* the awesome clay shoe was done by my sweet hubby in high school. Thanks to my in-laws for keeping good stuff like this. Also, I think it needs an air plant inside..
