ORC: Home Exterior Week TWO

It’s that time again! Let me update you on the One Room Challenge happenings. You can see week two work from featured and guest participants here. If you missed my post from last week, that’s here.

One Room Challenge: Week 2 Exterior | House Homemade

Because a big portion of our budget had to go to new siding and windows, I spun it into our ORC project. As a reminder, here’s where we’re going with things:

At the end of last week, we got our new windows! New windows means I won’t have to wash our windows for a very long time.. I haven’t thought about that or anything….yes I have.

They just brighten things up. I didn’t want a grid or anything fancy, just clean lines for the modern look I’m going for here. Here’s the before:

and a sun soaked after:

I also did a couple coats of paint on the front door. Man oh man is it bright but our house is always shaded. It’s like a ray of light. I love it. It’s SW Lei Flower.

It’s something you wouldn’t notice but made a big difference to me. I spray painted the brass hardware on the storm door, black.

We trimmed trees in the front yard and took a few down in the backyard.

You better believe this rotten thing is gone..

We thinned things out in this corner too. The tree in the middle, at the turn of the fence is now gone.

We are on the books to get the siding done on the 18th then hopefully painting will happen soon after. (Greek Villa is the one in the middle. #hearteyes)

We’re having an exceptionally rainy fall so I’m getting kind of nervous that I won’t all be done on this ORC deadline but I then remind myself that it’s OK.

It will get done and things that I can’t control, shouldn’t make me fret… phew.

Here’s the do to list because there’s nothing more fun than crossing one off.

remove plastic shutters
new windows (obviously not doing this myself)
new siding (same)
update trim around windows (again, not DIYing)
paint house  (how about I just put a star next to things I plan on doing?)
paint front door * ME ME ME!!
re-trim backdoor glass *
make planters for beside the door * us, us, us!
install new lighting*
pressure wash path and porch*
install new house numbers *
plant some new plants *
update mailbox *
make shutters (maybe)*

spray paint back porch fans *
paint garage door *
update back patio space *
trim trees *

Again, big thanks to my sponsors on this project. It’s been so fun so far.

  1. Any tips on painting brick exteriors? I live in humid Houston and am so worried about brick rot (but desperately want to paint our home)!

  2. If you follow Young House Love, they're about to paint their house with this product that lets bricks breath. I can't find what it's called right now but it seems like it would be a good option!
