Mixing and Matching Rugs in an Open Floor Plan

Gosh I feel like I’ve written a post like this before.. I haven’t but I’m sure I’ve touched on the topic. Mixing and matching rugs. It’s hard to pick multiples for one large space. I’m 100% sure, though, that I’ve proclaimed my love for area rugs. They are so much better than carpet (easily cleanable and also replaceable). They make it so easy to change the entire look of a space. And there are so many amazing styles, patterns and colors!! *this link contains affiliate links. It’s like a rug consultation for free but I get a tiny percentage from the website if you buy through the link. WIN WIN.

But the styles, patterns and colors part also ends up being the overwhelming part. How do you mix and match rugs when you need multiples in the same space?

There are a couple things I think about when I’m buying rugs that will work together in a large room.

Color— I love colored area rugs. They’re so bold and awesome. We have quite a few.

If you want to go for a boldly colored rug, I’d try to keep the rest of the rugs neutral. No competing for most colorful. (ps in our last house I didn’t follow this guideline. Too many awesome rugs, too little time.)

Contrast– For this I’m talking about the difference in brightness of a rug. You could do 2 lights and a dark or two darks and a light. Switch up the contrast of the rugs in a space and they won’t clash and they will keep things interesting.

Pattern and Scale— When you fall in love with a rug, you need to think about it’s design and the scale of the design. Is it giant and bold or is the pattern small and simple. How ever the one rug looks, try to pull in a different scale or type of print in on the coordinating ones. For example: A geometric pattern could work with another geometric pattern if the scale of the prints are different but a geometric and a floral would be easier to pair.

Let me show you a few examples I came up with to hopefully help. Each rug has a letter and links to the design board rugs will be at the bottom of this post.

In the groups above there is one bold pattern and some coordinating rugs to go with it. There are common colors in each. Different looking patterns and in different scales.

Depending on the spaces you’re working in you also have to think about function. I wouldn’t put a white rug or a shag rug under a dining table. If you want a jute looking rug, buy a tighter weave so that it’s easy to vacuum. Busy, patterned rugs are good for under tables and so are outdoor rugs.

If you like having more pattern AND color it’s no biggie. Just make sure
and vary the style of print and scale in the rug.   You can also help
them work together by making sure they have a common color.

Another tip if you want bolder rugs in one space. Maybe make the largest
one or the one that is in the center of the space a neutral then add
the bolder rugs in the areas that surround it. It’s like giving your
eyes a break in between the pops of awesomeness.

A couple tips for online shopping– Read the reviews. They’ll tell you if the color in the image is close to real life. They’ll talk about the quality of the rug and everything else you’ll want to know. After you find a rug you like, google search it’s name and see if you can find it anywhere else for cheaper.

Ok that’s it! Has this helped? Let me know if you have any questions. Also, if you want help specifically for your space remember I do e-design consults!
